This course is designed to explore principles of operation of solid state devices including diodes, transistors, and FETs, SCRs and UJTs. The hands-on laboratory portion of this course compares different type devices and their characteristics with emphasis on real life circuits and applications.
This course consists of eight lesson assignments. Each lesson requires you to read topics, or portions thereof, and to answer questions based on the assigned readings. You should solve all the problems in the exercise sections before continuing to the next topic and perform all the laboratory experiments.
Master the concepts presented within each reading assignment. Solve all problems in all exercise sections. Take time to compare your laboratory results with the expected results based on theory.
STUDENT EVALUATION AND GRADING METHOD
Students are required to complete all performance requirements above. Each of the eight assignments concludes with an examination comprising of a multiple-choice test. The assignment examinations are open book.
The final grade for this course will be determined as follows:

Using Semiconductor Diodes
Objectives: Upon the completion of this lesson the student will describe the operation of diodes and their limitations.
Operation of Semiconductor Devices
Objectives: Upon the completion of this lesson the student will be able to describe the various types of diodes. A discussion of atomic theory is followed by regions within the diodes, then a description of the various types such as the Zener, thermistors and other semiconductors.
Working with Semiconductor Diodes
Objectives: Upon the completion of this lesson the student will be able to describe and apply the knowledge gained in the previous two lessons through various practical experiments.
Silicon Controlled Rectifiers and Unijunction Transistors: Theory and Applications
Objectives: Upon the completion of this lesson the student will be able construct and analyze SCR and UJT circuits by understanding testing procedures using an ohmmeter, reverse-biasing and forward-biasing characteristics, AC and DC characteristics, and oscillations.
Rectifiers and Amplifiers / Transistor and FET Amplifiers (A and B)
Objectives: Upon the completion of this lesson the student will narrate the operation of an amplifier and rectifiers, their basic operation, and circuit parameters.
Operation of Tubes and Transistors
Objectives: Upon the completion of this lesson the student will be able to construct and analyze the simple transistor amplifier. The student is led from the two terminal diode to the elementary 3 terminal transistor. JFET and MOSFET types are also described. The various types of vacuum tubes are also presented.
How to Work with Transistors
Objectives: Upon the completion of this lesson the student will be discuss the characteristics of a transistor and how transistors operate. The characteristics include configuration, stabilization, leakage currents, amplifying stages, coupling, noise, drift, and frequency performance. The student will also be introduced to FETs.
