ELECTRIC CIRCUITS COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to explore the principles of AC circuits with emphasis on steady state AC circuits, along with relationships of frequency and impedance being analyzed and resonance studied.
The laboratory portion of the course elaborates on the behavior of capacitors, inductors, and transformers in a circuit; in addition to the practical experiments with resonance, filters, and optoelectronics.
This course consists of twenty-one lesson assignments. Each lesson requires you to read topics, or portions thereof, and to answer questions based on the assigned readings. You should solve all the problems in the exercise sections before continuing to the next topic and perform all the laboratory experiments.
Master the concepts presented within each reading assignment.
Solve all problems in all exercise sections. Take time to compare your laboratory results with the expected results based on theory.
STUDENT EVALUATION AND GRADING METHOD:
Students are required to complete all performance requirements above. Each of the twenty-one assignments concludes with an examination comprising of a multiple-choice test. The assignment examinations are open book.
The final grade for this course will be determined as follows: Twenty-one examinations averaged together and multiplied by 100%
Vital Statistics of AC Circuits / Magnetism and Magnetic Circuits/Induced Voltage and Current
Upon the completion of this lesson the student will sine wave characteristics, phase relationships, combining ac and dc components, magnetic properties, induced voltage and Benz's Law.
Inductance / Mutual Inductance and Magnetic Coupling /Transformers
Upon the completion of this lesson the student will be able to comprehend inductance, magnetic coupling, transformer operation, and transformer characteristics.
Fundamentals of Transformers
Upon the completion of this lesson the student will be able to check an audio transformer with an ohmmeter, determine phase and induced voltage relationships, calculate turns ratio, and then determine how current and impedance affect the performance of a transformer.
Electrical Charges and Capacitance / Capacitors in Action
Upon the completion of this lesson the student will be familiar with electric fields, charges, capacitor operation, phase, and reactance.
Capacitors and Capacitive Circuits
Upon the completion of this lesson the student will be able to calculate the capacitance of series or parallel connected capacitors, how frequency affects them, their application in filters and dealing with polarized units in a-c circuits.
Inductors and Inductive Circuits
Upon the completion of this lesson the student will be able to calculate the impedance of inductors, series and parallel inductors, their response to frequency, their color coding, and characteristics of variable inductors.
Currents and Voltages in AC Circuits
Upon the completion of this lesson the student will have a good understanding of AC circuit analysis.
Upon the completion of this lesson the student will understand resonant circuits and their characteristics.
Resonance and Filters
Upon the completion of this lesson the student will understand resonant circuits and their characteristics including impedance, voltage and current relationships, bandwidth, Q and their filter applications.
Circuit Response to Nonsinusoidal Waveforms
Upon the completion of this lesson the student will understand RLC circuit responses to nonsinusoidal waves, steady-state and transient responses, responses to pure resistive, inductive, and capacitive circuits, time-constant curves, RL and RC circuits and differentiating and integrating circuits.
Upon the completion of this lesson the student will get familiar with RC time constants and their applications.
RC Filter Circuits
Upon the completion of this lesson the student will understand low-pass, high-pass, bandpass and bandstop RC filters.
Upon the completion of this lesson the student will understand the principles of optoelectronics, which include LEDs, Photocells, Photodiodes, and transistors and finally opto-isolators. Testing them with an ohmmeter and understanding their characteristics are experimentally proven.
Thinking Circuits and Automatic Switches / Relays and Robots
Upon the completion of this lesson the student will understand digital circuits and relays as used in AND, OR and NOT circuits.
Electromagnetism and Relays
Upon the completion of this lesson the student will be able to recognize relationship between a relay and electromagnetism induction and their usage in burglar alarms and delay circuits.
